Dr. Lenahan pursued that path anyway.
With a background in biology and a deep interest in Asian philosophy and medicine, he went on to study at the New England School of Acupuncture as part of its first graduating class. He continued his training at the International College of Oriental Medicine in England, where he gained extensive clinical experience, and later interned with a Chinese doctor in New York City’s Chinatown.
After returning to New Jersey, Dr. Lenahan helped advance the profession itself. He was involved in the work to license acupuncture in New Jersey and helped establish standards, rules, and regulations for the practice. He also served for many years as chairman of the Acupuncture Examining Board under the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners.
Today, patients who visit Dr. Lenahan are receiving care from someone who not only practiced acupuncture when it was still new to many Americans, but who also helped shape the profession in New Jersey.
